Ben joined the Open Door Team at the beginning of September as Business Admin Apprentice. Find out why Ben chose the apprenticeship route and what’s he’s been up to during his first month with us….
On the 7th of September I joined the Open Door team as a Business Administrator apprentice
As a fresh out of college 18 year old, I was unsure about my professional future. After completing my A-Levels at Carmel College I was excited to start work in the real world. Being a student for the majority of my life, I wanted nothing more than to move on to the world of work.
After completing my A-levels I was interested in finding an apprenticeship that related to my qualifications. As I studied Business, Economics & Statistics for two years, I felt Business Admin was a suitable job role. On the government website I skipped past many job roles to come across Halton Housing and the role with the Open Door team. Instantly I knew I would love the job and I applied.
A few days after the application I received a phone call from Riverside College. Luckily, they passed me through to Karen Lopez, Rebecca Lawrence and Rob Poole for interview. A smooth process of thorough questions and scenario testing and I was a member of the team!
On my first day, walking up to the overpoweringly modern Waterfront Point office, I was a little nervous but also excited to be in the world of work. As soon as I met Rebecca, Angela and Stacey, I knew I had made the right choice. Making me feel welcome since the first moments, I finally enjoyed my new workplace.
So far, I have learned some of the systems the team uses to process information; I also have been lucky enough to see the new homes we are currently selling. Tannery Fields in Runcorn and Bower Brook Garden in Widnes have stood out to me, as it has shown that Open Door and Halton Housing really do care about improving the infrastructure of the area.
Although we’re working in difficult circumstances with Covid restrictions in place, the regular ‘Teams’ catchups with fellow colleagues have also been a great insight and shown the bond that the team has.
My biggest challenge so far has to be working remotely. I would love to bump into people around the office that I wouldn’t normally speak to in meetings. However, Halton Housing seems to have made a very smooth transition to remote working and I have all the equipment I need to be able to work from home.
In the future I am looking forward to building relationships with customers and meeting those will be moving into new homes in the area. Over the next 18 months I hope to develop key Business Administrator skills but more importantly, build relationships with customers and colleagues, to make Open Door’s as productive as possible.
Overall, I couldn’t have asked for a more welcoming first month and I am very excited to learn more about what my job will entail and how it will benefit the organisation.
